Flags to be lowered in honor of Virginia state senator
RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) - Governor Abigail Spanberger released the following statement and flag order Tuesday, October 27 in memory and respect of former State Senator Janet D. Howell.
“Senator Janet D. Howell was a trailblazing leader, dedicated public servant, and tireless advocate whose more than three decades of service in the Virginia Senate left an enduring mark on the Commonwealth. A pioneer for women in government, Senator Howell broke barriers as the first woman to serve on the Senate Finance Committee and later as the first woman to chair the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee.
“Throughout her distinguished career, she was a steadfast champion for public education, children and families, mental health services, and survivors of domestic violence. As a mentor, colleague, and friend, she opened doors for generations of women leaders and demonstrated the profound difference that a life devoted to public service can make. The Commonwealth is stronger because of her service, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps. We remember Senator Howell with deep gratitude and profound respect for a life dedicated to the people of Virginia.”
