RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Republican Party of Virginia held a major gathering in downtown Richmond Friday. Former gov. Bob McDonnell and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are just some of the big names who spoke at the Omni Hotel.

The 2016 Advance is expected to draw over 700 Republican activists, legislators, and statewide leaders. This year's theme is "Take Back Richmond!"

"I've missed some friends, and I'm glad to be back normal again," said Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.

McDonnell appears anxious to get back to pushing conservative principles now that the Supreme Court has overturned his corruption conviction. Supporters lined up to congratulate the former governor.

"Happy to be around a lot of friends and have my buddies Chris Christie and Eric Cantor here," said McDonnell. "My wife and some of my family...it's really nice."

Gov. Christie says he was happy to join McDonnell at this year's event where Republican grassroots activists will hear first-hand from candidates running for statewide office in 2017.

"We are going to get ready for the elections in 2017, and I'm also glad to be here for my friend Bob McDonnell. He's a good man and a good friend for a long time," said Gov. Christie. "The message tonight is that Republican values are sweeping the country. We are making some real changes in Washington, and we want to make some real changes here in Richmond, too."

You might say Virginia Democrats are less than impressed.

"You have disgraced Governor Chris Christie," said Emily Bolton with the Virginia Democratic Party. "Someone with the lowest approval rating of any governor of any state in 20 years. He was even kicked off Donald Trump's transition team."

The Virginia Democratic Party held a news conference to highlight their priorities.

"Economic opportunity for all, making it easier to vote, protecting women's access to healthcare, affordable healthcare for all Virginians," said Del. Jennifer McClellan, who is seeking the 9th District Senate seat vacated by Donald McEachin. "We're going to continue to try to focus on those things while Republicans are going to try to roll back progress."

Carly Fiorina will be in town for the Republican event on Saturday, which starts at 9 p.m. at the Omni-Richmond.
