Teen charged with attempted capital murder of New Kent deputy

NEW KENT, VA (WWBT) - The New Kent Sheriff's Office says a 17-year-old from Virginia Beach faces an attempted capital murder charge after driving toward a deputy during a pursuit early Thursday.
The sheriff's office says deputies and Virginia State Police troopers were involved in a pursuit after detecting a vehicle speeding on eastbound I-64 around 12:30 a.m.
The driver failed to stop and then exited the interstate at the West Point exit and traveled on eastbound Route 33 at a high rate of speed. The suspect then proceeded to make several turns.
"At one point the suspect drove the vehicle toward a New Kent deputy who was on foot and who had to jump from the path of the vehicle to avoid being struck," the New Kent Sheriff's Office said in a news release. "The suspect vehicle continued to travel on several additional roadways and onto private property, damaging private property, before entering James City County and ultimately being stopped just inside the entrance to Stonehouse."
The sheriff's office says the teen was driving a vehicle that was reported stolen from Powhatan.
In addition to the attempted capital murder charge, the teen -- who was wanted for numerous violations in Virginia Beach -- also faces charges of felony eluding, four counts of felony destruction of property, grand larceny auto, reckless driving, possession of stolen property (credit cards), failing to obey traffic signals, failure to wear a seat belt and trespassing.
While there were no injuries reported, three New Kent Sheriff's Office vehicles were damaged.
The suspect's name has not been released. He has been transported to a detention facility.
