HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - The Hanover Sheriff's Office says a Mechanicsville man faces multiple charges after striking a deputy's car, fleeing and then crashing.

The sheriff's office says just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, a deputy pulled over James A. Walters, 52, for a traffic violation. Walters initially stopped, but then refused to comply with the deputy.

The sheriff's office says the suspect put his vehicle in reverse, struck the deputy's vehicle, and then fled the scene. Another deputy then began to pursue Walters.

Walters traveled west on Mechanicsville Turnpike and then attempted to make a right turn onto Elm Drive. The sheriff's office says due to the suspect's speed and erratic driving, Walters lost control and collided with a utility pole. The pursuing deputy then collided into Walter's vehicle.

Walters was then transported to VCU Medical Center, but his condition has not been released. There are no reports of any other injuries.

Walters faces several charges: driving under the influence, driving after being declared a habitual offender, eluding, hit and run, obstruction of justice, failure to obey a stop sign, and assault on law enforcement.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Hanover County Sheriff's Office at (804) 365-6140 or the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
