CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (WWBT) - The four people found guilty in February for murdering and kidnapping Waynesboro Reserve Police Capt. Kevin Quick were sentenced Monday to life in prison.

According to NBC29:

  • Daniel Mathis was sentenced to life in prison, plus 132 years along with fines and restitution.
  • Shantai Shelton was sentenced to life in prison plus 82 years along with fines and restitution.
  • Kweli Uhuru AKA Travis Bell was sentenced to life in prison plus 10 years.
  • Mersadies Shelton was sentenced to life in prison plus 82 years.

Shantai Shelton, Mersadies Shelton, Daniel Mathis and Kweli Uhuru are believed to be members of the "99 Goon Syndikate" gang.

During the trial in February, Uhuru confirmed he had been a member of the Bloods gang while in prison, but he wanted to start an organization that did good things for the community.

"Instead of becoming a problem, I wanted to become a solution," Uhuru said.

Prosecutors say the defendants committed numerous armed robberies, violent home invasions and trafficked cocaine across Central Virginia from September 2013. Prosecutors say the crimes culminated in the kidnapping and murder of Quick in February 2014.

Quick was reported missing on Feb. 1, 2014. After a week of searching, his body was found in Goochland County with a gunshot to the head.

Quick's truck was discovered in Louisa County. Prosecutors say investigators found forensic evidence inside the SUV, including DNA belonging to some of the defendants.
