STAFFORD, VA (WWBT) - The Stafford Sheriff's Office has apprehended the man who allegedly fired several shots at a deputy Tuesday night.

18-year-old Joshua Anthony Sumter was arrested in Southern Stafford County around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday after escaping from his mother's house. Deputies issued warrants on his arrest and was wanted on charges of attempted capital murder.

Earlier, deputies were responding to a breaking and entering call coming from his mother's house on Windsor Ridge Court around 10:15 p.m. after not being allowed to live there or return. When deputies arrived on scene, they say he found Sumter lying on the floor in an upstairs bedroom.

Deputies tried to get Sumter to show his hands, and that was when he began shooting. One of the deputies was hit four times - in the upper chest area, arm, hip, and thigh. The deputy was wearing body armor at the time, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy was taken to a local hospital for treatment but was later transported to another hospital for surgery scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Officials say his condition is serious but stable. The deputy, whose name is being withheld, has nearly two years experience as a patrol officer.

Sumter was taken into custody. While he was being escorted from the sheriff's office to the jail, authorities say Sumter attempted a violent escape and assaulted a deputy but was quickly taken back into custody.

Charges for his escape include assault on a law enforcement officer and escape with force.

He is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
