Town's 'selfie' statue turns heads, becomes Internet sensation

SUGAR LAND, TX. (WWBT) - Statues and sculptures can capture so many elements through their art form, but in one Texas town, a new sculpture is capturing the moment of someone capturing a moment.
Sugar Land Town Square's public plaza is now the home of a pair of new sculptures as part of a 10-piece collection, one of which features two girls taking a selfie.
For the community of Sugar Land and its leaders, they say the bronze figures, which includes another sculpture featuring a man playing guitar while sitting on the ledge of a fountain, represent "activities common in the plaza."
Since their installation, the selfie statue has been capturing the attention of locals.
According to the city, the public art donations were reviewed and approved by two citizen committees in 2014 before Sugar Land's City Council gave the final green light on the sculptures.
The estimated value of both statues is approximately $32,000.
An unveiling ceremony commemorating the donation will be announced at another time. The city has even gotten into the conversation surrounding the sculptures, creating their own hashtag, #SelfieStatueGate2016.
