RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - There's a new option for people in need of emergency medical care in Chesterfield County.

The Chippenham Hospital Swift Creek ER is a free-standing emergency room that opened Tuesday in the Hancock Square Shopping Center off Hull Street Road. A few of its unique features include advanced trauma, emergency room care, Telemedicine and its location.

Tim McManus, C.E.O. of Chippenham-Johnston Willis Hospitals, says population in the Hull Street corridor is exploding and data shows by 2025, the population will have grown 17%. Those people need access to health care.

"When you think about having your child, your loved one or your parent who you're caring for; to have somebody who can see them right away where minutes matter in a heart attack and those kinds of pieces in particular for the EMS community to have immediate access, it makes a big difference. So 10 or 15 minutes can make the difference sometimes in life and death."

Another unique feature of the facility is a CAT scan which can see a lot more than what you can see in a traditional urgent care center. There's also a 24-hour board-certified doctor on the premises which McManus says is a great benefit for the Midlothian community.

The brand new facility is dedicated to both adult care, with specialized waiting and treating rooms in the ER, as well as child care, with rooms on the pediatric side.
