BUCKINGHAM, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State Police are still investigating what exactly happened before Saturday's officer involved shooting that killed a Buckingham High School senior. Meanwhile, teammates, and coaches are stunned by the star athlete's death.

Wade Lee is still trying to wrap his head around the death of his friend and former teammate, 19-year-old Dyzshawn Perkins.

"It shocked me. I was like 'no not this guy'. I think it shocked everyone," said Lee.

Lee says he lives next door to where Perkins was fatally shot Saturday afternoon. He and Perkins played football together on the Buckingham County Knights, where Perkins was an offensive lineman.

This past season, Buckingham coaches say Perkins was named team captain, made the All-State Team, and was recognized for having a 3.0 GPA. Coaches say Perkins was always laughing, and was someone the other players looked up to.

"He was a real good football player. Aggressive. I liked him. He was a strong guy," Lee said.

Lee says he still can't understand how his friend could have been killed at the hands of police.

Investigators say a series of events lead up to the shooting. It started just before 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Faulknier County store, where police say Perkins was yelling and attacking customers.

Police say Perkins fled the store and broke into a nearby home where he attacked an elderly couple.

Just after 1:00 p.m. police say deputies arrived to a home in the 800 block of Penlan Road. It was there, police say, Perkins jumped through a window, knocked a deputy to the ground, and attacked him. State police say that's when deputies fired, killing Perkins.

State police say they investigation into the shooting is still ongoing. Once it's complete, they will present those findings to the Commonwealth's Attorney.
