RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - After police fired 10 gas canisters into a South Richmond home late Friday, officers arrested a man at the center of a four-hour SWAT standoff.

The scene unfolded in the 4200 block of Stockton Street, just after 4:30 p.m. Richmond Police arrested one person just after 8:30 p.m.

The standoff started after the suspect allegedly shot a woman in the abdomen near the home. The man then barricaded himself inside, refusing to communicate with negotiation teams after 5 p.m.

Police said the shooting victim was a family member, and is expected to recover from her injuries.

After a robotic unit sent an explosive charge to open one of the doors, the man inside did not respond. Teams then fired multiple gas canisters into the house, with booms heard across the area.

According to police, the man then tried to escape from the back of the home, but was arrested moments later.

When teams left the neighborhood and a SWAT vehicle drove away from the house's front yard, family members said the suspect was not in his right mind, and began to repair the inside of the home.

Charges filed and the man's identity were not immediately available, as police moved from SWAT response into the investigation phase of the case.
