RVA drivers fill up while gas prices fall under $2

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)
It's an early holiday gift at the gas pump! Fuel prices in Richmond have dropped to their lowest in more than five years. Some stations are posting prices at less than $2 per gallon of regular. Drivers are lining up to fill up, as costs are falling.
One driver stopped to take a picture of the gas price posted at the Sam's Club in Midlothian- $1.98 per gallon.
"The gas hasn't been that price in a long time," said Darlene Morris, who pulled in to fill her tank.
Gas prices across the country are the lowest in about six years, averaging about $2.41 a gallon, according to AAA. A year ago at this time, the price per gallon was about $3.26. The near one-dollar drop has got lines at gas stations backed up.
"You couldn't even get in to the gas pumps. It was so crazy," said Sam's Club employee Pam Davis, of the crowd at the store's gas station.
Experts say prices per barrel have dropped, which has prompted less pain at the pump.
About a year ago in Richmond, the average price for a gallon of regular was $3.11. Now, it's $2.24. The bigger tank, the bigger savings.
George Valentine usually pays about $90 to entirely fuel his pick-up truck at more than $3 per gallon.
However, with prices at under $2, he's spending a third less.
“That's $30 (savings),” said Valentine, agreeing that the cost cut is significant.
Nearly 91 percent of Virginia holiday travelers are hitting the highway, as well. Less money spent on gas means more for gifts, extra cash for food, and even upgrade accommodations.
"It's a long time coming, and people really need this," added Morris.
According to a Gas Buddy survey, Americans are saving about $250 million a day on gas, compared to last year. Experts are also predicting gas prices next year could be the lowest since 2004. That means Americans would be spending about $550 less on fuel in 2015, than in 2014.
