FORT LEE, Va. (WWBT)—Fort Gregg-Adams will immediately transition its name back to Fort Lee, but the name change honors an Army private for his bravery during the Spanish-American War.

“This post has always stood for excellence, integrity, and mission readiness,” said Major General Michelle Donahue, the installation’s Senior Commander. “While the name on the gate may change, the spirit of this installation remains grounded in the people who serve, support, and sacrifice every day.”

The base was previously renamed in 2023 in honor of Lieutenant General Arthur Gregg and Lt. Colonel Charity Adams.

As Fort Lee, the installation now honors Private Fitz Lee, a Medal of Honor recipient and Buffalo Soldier of the 10th Cavalry. Born in nearby Dinwiddie County, Virginia, Lee volunteered to rescue wounded comrades under enemy fire during the 1898 landing at Tayabacoa, Cuba.

The base is currently updating signage and materials, and will provide educational resources and community programming to support the transition.
