‘A wonderful feeling’: Giving machines fulfill needs for families in Central Va., around the world

HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) - The hustle and bustle of the holiday shopping season is underway at Short Pump Town Center as people accomplish their to-do lists before Christmas next week.

As shoppers get their last-minute gifts, giving machines are popping up to help you give back to your neighbors in need.

“This is a season of giving, a chance for our community to come together and help meet the needs of so many diverse people,” said Elder J. Matthew Scott with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The global initiative, sponsored by the the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, gives people a chance to buy much-needed items for others through organizations in Richmond and around the world.

The giving machine works similar to a vending machine, where people can select their donation and pay for it. The items range from rental assistance and groceries to diapers and even a baby goat.

“They receive directly those donations that the individuals are able to take and purchase, so it’s a really wonderful way for them to help,” said Elder Scott.

Families living in Central Virginia are taking part in the effort, including Spencer and Rebekah Walmer.

“We bought a month’s worth of groceries for a family through Shalom Farms and I got a baby goat,” said Spencer Walmer.

The Walmers are using this moment to show their kids the gift of giving.

“Children don’t get a lot of opportunities to like give in Christmas, so a lot of times there’s a focus on what is Santa going to bring me, so we’ve been trying to give them opportunities to give back and to learn about helping other people,” said Spencer Walmer.

The machines will be at Short Pump Town Center until Jan. 1, an experience bringing light into the world.

“We would invite all to come, take a look at what you can do to bless lives and many others,” said Elder Scott. “To feel the goodness of giving, it’s a wonderful feeling and helping support others, it’s a wonderful feeling and a great feeling for all.”
