‘Really incredible’: Thousands take part in ‘America’s Friendliest Marathon’
Nearly 21,000 people laced up their running shoes for the event on Saturday morning.
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Cheers and applause filled the streets in Richmond on Saturday morning as thousands of people laced up their running shoes for the 47th Allianz Partners Richmond Marathon.

The event broke an attendance record after nearly 21,000 people signed up to take part in the marathon, half-marathon, and 8k.
“So many people finished here under three hours, so it’s super exciting to see everyone come in and the energy down here at the finish line is just fantastic,” said Alex Jacques, who participated in the half-marathon.
Robert Mazzanti won the Richmond Marathon after crossing the finish line in two hours, 25 minutes and 12 seconds.

“Been training hard the last two years and it’s a great hometown race,” he told 12 On Your Side.
A dream coming true for Mazzanti, showing how his hard work paid off.
“I’ve been training seriously for the last 12 weeks for this running about 100 to 120 miles a week through Richmond,” he said. “If you’ve been Capital Trail or any part of Richmond, you probably seen me going through your neighborhood.”
Mazzanti credits the crowd for helping him make it to the end.
“There are a couple of quiet parts and next thing you know, you turn a corner and you have people you have never met before, they’re out cheering like they’re my best friend like they’ve known me my entire life,” said Mazzanti. “It’s really incredible how much everyone comes out and gets behind all the runners on every level.”

The energy was electric as spectators lined the streets with their signs, encouraging everyone to achieve their goals, including Allie Baum.
“It was amazing. It was really. fun. Really, really fun. Great crowds the whole way,” she said.

Baum’s kids motivated her to complete her first Richmond Marathon.
“Reminding them that I don’t give up, I don’t want them to give up. That’s the cheesy answer. The real answer is go finish, get done, go get a burger,” she said.
A beloved tradition many are looking forward to run again next year.
“I love Richmond and as long as I’m healthy, I’ll be out here running,” said Mazzanti.
