During this event, guests will have the chance to explore model train displays and participate in train-themed programs in the museum’s historic train station building.

The Science Museum’s Model Railroad Show is one of the largest annual events for private hobbyists in the state. It showcases a whole room filled with intricate displays featuring detailed landscapes and miniature cities, all crafted by members of model railroad clubs based in Virginia. This year’s event welcomes nine setups including a LEGO display

In addition to the display, guests can watch a blacksmith using a hammer and anvil similar to those used to make locomotive engine parts. Some guests will even have the opportunity to help with the forging!

Educators will conduct steam engine demonstrations throughout the weekend, and “The Forge” will feature the popular hands-on collaborative train scene-building activity. Additionally, guests can chat with a model railroad hobbyist and observe the decoration of authentic display elements.

This year, guests can enjoy episodes of the PBS KIDS program “Dinosaur Train,” which will be playing throughout the day in the Barbara Thalhimer Theater.

The Science Museum is also transforming the RF&P Forum, the former dining room of the 105-year-old Broad Street Station, into an interactive family train yard. Here, aspiring engineers can play with a variety of train sets and create their own conductor hats.
