‘Every hero has a story’: Fallen public safety workers honored at memorial ceremony
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - 964 heroes were honored at the Virginia Public Safety Foundation’s 10th annual memorial ceremony Saturday afternoon.
“These are not just names or numbers, they were people. Every hero has a story and every day that passes, some of that history is lost. We cannot allow these heroes and their incredible stories to be forgotten,” said Tracy Russillo, vice president of the Virginia Public Safety Foundation.
Families from all across Virginia came to Capitol Square in Richmond to honor their loved one and make sure their legacy lives on.
The Virginia Public Safety Foundation started this ceremony in 2014, honoring 850 Virginia heroes.
In the last decade, more than 100 more public safety workers lost their lives. This year, 27 names are being added to the memorial wall.
“I can come and be somewhere and know that he’s honored doing something that he died absolutely loving to do,” expressed Brooke Harris, whose husband died while serving in the Public Safety Division for the Virginia State Police.
Despite it being a reminder that their loved one is gone, she appreciates this event and is thankful to be able to come.
“I’m just grateful that they honor our loved ones and thankful for this event because without we may not know how special that other peoples families members are,” Harris said.
Next year’s service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13.
