K-9 deputy dies after collapsing while tracking burglary suspect

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA/Gray News) - Authorities in Alabama said a 4-year-old K-9 deputy died after collapsing while tracking a burglary suspect.
The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said Malice, a Belgian Malinois, collapsed Sunday while assisting another agency in tracking a burglary suspect, WALA reported.
Malice was taken to a veterinarian but later died, deputies said.
Malice was a dual-purpose K-9 officer and recently completed a weeklong competition at the National Police K-9 Association.
Deputy Jantzen Ward, Malice’s handler and partner, said he was not only a loyal partner but also a trusted and loved family member.
“He will be missed and never forgotten,” he said.
During his service with the sheriff’s office, Malice had five apprehensions and seized 10 pounds of meth and more than 12 pounds of marijuana.
