RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) -Filming starts soon for Pharrell Williams’ new biopic.

It’s described as a coming-of-age musical set in Virginia Beach, but Richmond will play a larger role in the production.

Producers are now looking for extras and set pieces.

“I’m so excited to be back in Richmond casting this untitled musical. I’ve always been a big fan of musicals, and I’ve never worked on a musical in all my years of casting,” said Chad Darnell, the Extras Casting Director.

Darnell is no stranger to Richmond’s film scene. He’s worked on numerous projects over the years. Now he’s casting extras around town for Pharrell Williams’ still-untitled movie.

“I’m so excited to be working with the film commissioner, Andy Edmunds, again. He’s so great. He’s found us locations in Hopewell in Virginia Beach, and the majority of our film will be shot here in Richmond,” said Darnell.

The movie is described as a coming-of-age musical set in Virginia Beach in the summer of 1977, inspired by the neighborhood where Pharrell grew up.

The Grammy Award winner will produce the project, which will star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Halle Bailey and be directed by Michel Gondry.

“He’s a genius. I mean, I can’t wait for people to see what he’s doing; it’s stunning,” said Darnell.

However, the production is looking for some local faces.

“For this film, we are looking for people of all ages. Looking for kids, we got some preschoolers singing in the film—all ethnicities. Looking for beautiful faces, beautiful character faces, we have a great need for a lot of Black and African American talent to come play with us and, especially, we need period cars. Cars from the 1960′s and 70′s,” said Darnell.

They also provide a bonus if you have a vintage car for them to use. For Darnell, this is a chance for the local film scene to get some much-needed attention.

”Everybody wants to be involved when the movies come to town, and I just love being here; the film office is extraordinary, and Richmond has such a great local crew that I want to see them working all the time,” said Darnell.
