Retired USPS supervisor struggling to receive pension checks in mail
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - A retired USPS supervisor is demanding answers after his pension check for March arrived at a Richmond post office but was never delivered.
77-year-old Arnold Smith relies on his monthly pension checks to survive, so he was upset when he didn’t receive one this month. He said he uses ‘informed delivery,’ so he saw that his pension check was in the city.
“It shows you what you get in the mail that day,” Smith said.
When it never reached his mailbox, he started making calls.
According to Smith, the original pension check was canceled, and a new one was sent on March 18. He told 12 On Your Side that last week, he got another notification that the mail was in Richmond, but he still had no luck.
“Same thing, picture of the check, in Richmond… no check… a second time this month,” Smith said franticly.
Now, he’s struggling to survive because his monthly pension checks are his primary source of income.
“I’m sorry I sound frantic, but at this point, I am. The landlord is threatening me and upset, don’t even have proper food,” said Smith.
Smith isn’t the only person having issues getting mail delivered on time.
According to the latest USPS Service Performance Data, Virginia ranks at the bottom for adequate, on-time deliveries. The goal is to have your packages delivered within 2 days, and the USPS data shows that Virginia drivers should deliver your packages within 2 days 90% of the time. But results show that so far this year, we’re down by 26%.
“Never got back with me to check have I heard anything,” Smith said.
He said that he has been getting all other mail delivered just fine. However, Smith is concerned that his money is being stolen.
“It’s like somebody stole two checks, you get a replacement check and again a government check, not getting it, and this is a government thing, and nobody knows anything or nobody tells you anything or gets back to you,” he said.
