RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The Virginia Department of Transportation is warning drivers to use caution due to snow, freezing rain and mixed precipitation that may impact roads in Virginia.

VDOT advises drivers to monitor road conditions and adjust plans accordingly based on weather forecasts.

In preparation for the harsh weather conditions, VDOT is pre-treating roads and bridges to prevent a bond from forming between the pavement and the snow and ice. Crews will monitor roadways and plows will remove snow if 2 or more inches accumulate.

In an effort to maintain safety, VDOT has issued a few pointers for drivers during inclement weather:

  • If possible, avoid traveling during inclement weather
  • Allow more time to reach your destination.
  • Drive at slower speeds & keep a safe distance.
  • Use caution on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas.
  • Avoid passing a snowplow or spreader unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • Keep an emergency supply kit in your car at all times in case of a breakdown or stoppage. This should include a flashlight and extra batteries, ice scraper, cell phone, charger, jumper cables, blankets/quilts, first aid kit, bottled water, non-perishable food (nuts, energy bars), abrasive material for traction (cat litter, sand), and shovel.

For more information on road conditions, drivers are encouraged to take advantage of VDOT’s free 511 mobile app, which offers information about road conditions, traffic, incidents, construction, and congestion, as well as access to traffic cameras, weather, and more.
