Trump touts Iran peace deal at G7, but details remain unclear
President says agreement will be signed Friday in Switzerland as global economy reels from conflict
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) -
EVIAN, France — President Trump announced Tuesday that the U.S. has struck a deal with Iran, set to be signed Friday in Switzerland, but the details of the agreement remain undisclosed.
One thing the President was clear on, “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. That’s what it says. It won’t have one to buy to develop. It will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said at the G7 summit in Evian, France.
The deal was nearly derailed in the final hours after Israel bombed Lebanon, violating one of the known basic parameters of the agreement.
“I didn’t like where 2 hours before we’re signing the agreement that there was an attack in Lebanon, in Beirut,” Trump said.
The president signaled his growing frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the summit.
“Without the United States, there would be no Israel. Without me, there would be no Israel. Has no other president who was willing to do what I did,” Trump said.
The global economy continues to reel from the conflict. Global energy markets have been choked by the Strait of Hormuz’s impasse, with the World Bank expecting growth to decline 2.5 percent this year.
Gas prices doubled between the start of the war and May. Experts say it could take months for prices to settle back down even with peace potentially on the horizon.
