Flight cancellations and delays mount at RIC amid FAA Restrictions
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Travelers at Richmond International Airport (RIC) are experiencing significant disruptions likely related to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) mandatory flight restrictions.
While the FAA has not directly ordered flight cuts at RIC, numerous cancellations are leaving some passengers frustrated.
Passengers arriving at or departing from RIC on Monday were closely monitoring flight information. Many are seen with their eyes glued to flight boards, constantly checking for updates.
“I hit refresh on the app every 30 seconds to see if the flight has been cancelled or delayed,” said Steve Johnson, a traveler headed to Charlotte.
The FAA’s ongoing flight restrictions are contributing to an increase in cancellations. On Monday, RIC reported more than a dozen cancellations.
Sandra Forbes, who had a Saturday flight to Newark cancelled, faced uncertainty with her rebooked flight.
“It was a 7 a.m. flight and then in the middle of the night I get another text that it’s going to be at 12:30 today,” Forbes said, “I fly a lot, and this is the first time something like this has happened to me.”
Delays are also causing considerable inconvenience. Two women were stuck in Richmond after their flight to Cincinnati was delayed several times on Sunday night.
“Got delayed 4 times, so by the time we got to Philly, where we had our layover, we would’ve missed our flight to Cincy,” one passenger said.
The disruptions at RIC are largely connected to the impact on major hub airports, including Chicago and Fort Lauderdale, which are among the most affected by the restrictions.
“I would hate to be going through Charlotte or Atlanta right now because I probably would be sitting in front of the Auntie Anne’s Pretzel stuffing my face in misery,” Johnson said.
The situation is expected with flight cuts increasing to 6% on Tuesday, 8% on Thursday, and a substantial 10% by Friday. Fortunately, staffing has not been a significant issue at RIC.
RIC officials released a statement expressing appreciation for their workforce:
“We extend our sincere gratitude to these dedicated professionals for their tireless service, and to our passengers and community partners for their continued patience and support during this challenging period. We are hopeful that a resolution to the federal shutdown will be reached soon.”
“Hopefully, we can get to some kind of conclusion soon, air travel can get back to the way that it was,” Johnson said.
To avoid being caught off guard, RIC officials are strongly advising all passengers to closely monitor their airline’s apps and websites for the latest flight status information.
