RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Movie lovers, ready your popcorn and candy because entertainment is expanding at Movieland at Boulevard Square.

Over the next six months, the movie theater will undergo a multi-million dollar renovation.

“The theater opened in 2009, and this is by far the largest renovation we’ve done,” said Ethan Ochis, General Manager of Movieland at Boulevard Square.

“We’ll be able to offer the latest in the movie-going experience, and we’ll continue to be the theater of choice for Richmond and its neighbors,” said Ochis.

Movieland is the only first-run movie theatre in Richmond’s city limits.

The renovations started this fall in what was once a locomotive assembly plant.

“Our renovations are well underway, and we just opened six auditoriums this past week. Still to come over the next six months are new electric recliners and larger screens in all auditoriums. Two BTX bowtie extreme auditoriums with 50-foot screens and Dolby Atmos sound, a new bar and lounge and a giant arcade,” said Ochis.

Those BTX theaters are being constructed in their two largest auditoriums, and Movieland is considering making them available for large rentals.

You can now see certain movies in their other renovated theaters and relax in the newer recliners in the lobby. The lobby will also house the 50-game arcade, duckpin bowling, and lounge area.

Movieland says the goal of all these changes is to create a more immersive experience, and manager Ochis tells us that customers are impressed based on the feedback so far.

“We will continue to present the best in commercial and independent films now in a very luxurious environment. Our new seats really enhance the experience, and our great food and bar only make it that much more special,” said Ochis.

Work can be expected to be done by spring 2025.
