HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) - If you enjoy working with students and are looking for a job with flexible hours, Henrico County Schools has an excellent opportunity for you!

The school district is seeking substitute teachers for the 2024-25 school year in three categories: daily, long-term, and permanent.

  • Daily substitutes have the flexibility to choose when and where they work, and what grade or subject they teach. Effective July 1, daily substitute pay will increase to $135.26 Monday through Thursday and $160.26 on Fridays.
  • Long-term substitutes, also known as “board” substitutes, are responsible for filling a teaching position for at least 21 consecutive days, usually to cover for a teacher who is on an extended leave. Beginning on July 1, long-term substitutes will receive a pay increase to $254.72 per day. They are entitled to health care benefits for both themselves and their children. These positions are advertised individually by HCPS according to the school. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree.
  • Permanent substitutes are assigned to a specific school and are available to substitute in any classroom within that building as needed. Effective July 1, the pay rate for permanent substitutes will increase to $21.88 per hour. Additionally, permanent substitutes are eligible for health care benefits for themselves and their children. These positions are posted on an individual basis by each school.

Retired teachers who wish to work as a substitute teacher in the school division need to wait for a period of 90 days from their retirement date.

Apart from substitute teachers, HCPS is also looking for candidates to fill various other positions such as custodial and maintenance staff, bus drivers, school nutrition staff, school nurses, instructional assistants, and classroom teachers.

The job fair will be held on Tuesday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fairfield Area Library.
