Standoff with police ends at VSP headquarters

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - UPDATE: Police now investigating the incident as a suicide attempt.

At approximately 12:40 a.m., Saturday June 13th, Virginia State Police dispatchers at the Richmond Field Office Headquarters noticed a vehicle pull into and park in the front parking lot of the headquarters building in the 9300 block of Brook Road. When the driver did not exit the vehicle, a trooper was called to the parking lot to check on the vehicle. The trooper found the driver was armed with a firearm and suffering from an apparent head wound. The driver was talking with troopers and a negotiator, who responded to the scene, but refused to comply with commands to put down the weapon and safely exit the vehicle. State police deployed a flash bang diversionary tactic so they could safely approach the vehicle, remove the driver from the vehicle, and render medical assistance. The driver was disarmed and immediately taken to an ambulance at the scene. The male died en-route to the hospital.

State police never fired any shots during the course of the incident. The driver never fired at the troopers during the negotiations. No state police personnel were injured during the incident.

The incident is being investigated as a suicide. The driver was a 55-year-old male from Arizona.

Brook Road was reopened at by 5 a.m.

An intense overnight standoff in Henrico ends at Virginia State Police headquarters.

Officers had to shut down part of Brook Road, Pennsylvania Avenue and a nearby ramp on Interstate 295 for over two hours.

Police tell NBC12 a man was sitting in the parking lot of police headquarters and they originally thought he had a gun.

The standoff started when officers began to approach.

With the help of Henrico Police, Virginia State Police finally brought the situation to an end.

Roads in the area are now back open.

No information on whether or not anyone was hurt, but an ambulance was seen in the area.
