CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Chesterfield police have a man in custody following a violent attack at a residential hotel. 58-year-old Gordon Taylor is charged with abduction and kidnapping, sexual battery and possession of a firearm while in possession of drugs.

Virginia Code defines abduction as an act done with force or intimidation depriving a person of their personal liberty. Now police are building their case.

At the In Towne Suites off Huguenot Road in North Chesterfield, police say Taylor committed a crime that's left the community in shock.

"Oh my gosh. That's scary," said Kathy Milstead.

She lives at the extended stay and is just learning Taylor, one of her neighbors at the hotel, is accused of forcing his way into a woman's room - holding her at gunpoint.

Police say once the man made his way inside of the room he took advantage of the woman and then made off with her cash.

"It kind of makes me worried because I stay here alone," said a female resident who didn't want to be identified.

"{Reporter} Do you feel safe? {Resident} Not really. I'm getting the hell out of here in two weeks," said a male resident.

A hotel representative says it was a hotel employee who actually notified police the night of the crime. Management says it continues to work with investigators and that the safety of guests and employees is of utmost importance. The company says it alerts guests at check in of common-sense measures to ensure their safety.

Milstead says she's never had a reason to be afraid.

"It's secure. No one can get in without a card which makes me feel safe," she said.

While one of her neighbors is saying it's time to go.

"We've got a different crowd. It's becoming a project…All these boys hanging on the corner and all {at night}," the man said.

In addition to money, police say Taylor also stole prescription medications. Neighbors are now relieved the suspect is in custody.
