RPS releases new details on clear backpack policy
The new policy takes effect July 1.
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - More information is coming in about Richmond City Public Schools’ clear backpack policy.
Two weeks ago, the school board voted to approve the policy - requiring all students to have clear backpacks.
“This decision was made by the RPS School Board on June 3, 2024, and is a preventive safety and security measure to ensure RPS Schools are safe and productive learning environments,” the school division said.
The division has since created a webpage to answer questions from families and students.
Students can still use lunch bags, boxes, and small pouches to carry personal items. However, they may be subject to inspection.
The school division agreed to make clear backpacks available to families who may be unable to afford one.
The policy takes effect July 1.
